The South might not be known for its health and wellness vibes, but Raleigh is an exception and full of surprises. Raleigh is the Capital of North Carolina, known as the “city of oaks” and is considered a national historical landmark. There is no shortage of ways to stay fit and nourished in Raleigh through local food, fitness and nature walks.
In my quest to visit and explore all 50 states, I decided to make Idaho state number 39, and visit its capital, Boise. About 223,000 people live in the city, and it is surrounded by the Boise mountain range. Due to the size and geographical layout of the city, it is very walkable, so it’s easy to fit in a lot in a short amount of time.
Staying healthy and nourished on the road can sometimes be a struggle. Over the years I have developed some packing tips and hacks allowing me to travel lightly with some of my favorite products to keep me nourished on the road. Not only is keeping your health and fitness routine possible but it is easier then most think!
Peru is hands down one of my favorite countries in South America. It's a great country for nourishing fresh food options and staying active while on the road. Lima, its capital, sits on the Pacific coast and is one of South America’s largest cities. The first time I was in Lima, I was only there for three days and had not had time to properly prepare for the trip. Although I’m a fan of “on the fly” planning for some things, other activities require a bit of preparation...
Sedona, AZ is known for its massive red-rock formations and is considered sacred land of peace and power. Many people travel here to find answers to help them on their path of life. It is recognized as an energy earth vortex which some believe can offer healing powers and awaken creative energies.
Detroit is not typically on people's top list for travel destinations, but there is much more this historical city has to offer than people might expect. I should start this blog by saying I grew up in the suburbs, 30 minutes outside of Detroit. I left Michigan however, at the age of 18 and I was never fully able to explore this city in all of its glory as an adult. Now that I'm a full-fledged adult with a license who can enjoy a glass of wine...
As cities go, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is much more cosmopolitan than I had expected. Besides being the land of coffee and motorbikes Vietnamese cuisine is on point and despite doses of westernization it offers many culturally unique things to see and do. It was not difficult to stay nourished here with good food (yay, spring rolls!) and quality Vietnamese coffee. Vietnam is the second largest producer of coffee in the world and with a population of over 8 million people there are thousands of unique and charming cafes to get your caffeine fix.
Why would La Paz, Bolivia of all places be one of my favorite travel destinations? Because it was a beautifully tough place to live for a month, offering some once-in-a-lifetime adventure tourism and no better way to nourish yourself than to challenge yourself. I highly recommend taking a break from sunny beach vibe destinations and taking a chance and challenging yourself in this uniquely bizarre and ridiculously beautiful country that you will never forget.
Ok, so by clean and healthy, I do not mean the air. Due to thousands of motor bikes, tuk tuks and vehicles on condensed roads, pollution comes with the territory in Phnom Penh. What I did not expect to find were so many hipster cafe's with clean, raw, vegan and gluten free food options that make you feel like your on a yoga retreat cleanse resort rather than a large city in a third world country.
After living in Phnom Penh for two weeks I jumped at the chance at an invitation to go to the island of Koh Rong in hopes I could remove myself from noise pollution and bask in some relaxing beach vibes. I did not have time to research, but I thought, I have been to island's before, I've got this. I discovered it was not entirely the vision I had in mind when I think of a Cambodian Island. I do not want to deter anyone from going but it is important to know what to expect; if like me you were going seeking some R & R...don't expect much.
Who would not want to frolic with elephants while in Thailand? There is no shortage of opportunities to hang out with elephants in Chiang Mai, however, there is a shortage of companies offering a ethical and sustainable eco-tourism project.
Staying fit while in Chiang Mai is not difficult and the city offers many options for whatever you fancy. My go to activities here were Muay Thai, yoga, hiking and running. I highly recommend taking a Muay Thai class which is an important aspect of Thai culture as well as a day of hiking at the easy on the eyes National Park in Doi Inthanon.
December is not the easiest month to stay focused on a healthy and balanced lifestyle at home or abroad. Luckily, Chiang Mai Thailand makes it fairly easy to travel internationally and still nourish the body and mind with some solid powerhouse food, cafes and restaurants.
I focus on balance in travel with nourishment of the mind, body and soul but with a side of a great cocktails and I found some in Bali. It's easy to eat healthy foods that make you feel good in Bali, when you look in the right places.
I have been asked often by family and friends what it's like to hike 4 days and 26 miles to a wonder of the world. There is no easy way to describe the experience but if you are in good health (even if you loath hiking) this is a must see that will hit many birds with one stone nourishing your mind body AND soul in four days. I promise you won't regret it.
Cusco is indeed a magical place and one of my favorite in South, America. It's even more enjoyable after you acclimate to the high elevation. Finding healthy balanced meals was much easier in Cusco than other Countries in South America...Buenas dias Ceviche!
